Since I have been writing this blog, about a year now if you can believe that, I have gotten a slow but steady stream of music sent to me by bands and PR folks representing bands that are trying to make their big break. Most of this music hasn't been to my taste, but I recently got an email from Patrick Pleau, the lead singer of Plajia, a band from Montreal, with links to some pretty cool tunes.

Plajia describes themselves on their Myspace page as an "ambient rock band, with diverse influences such as: folk, 60’s and 70’s
music, space rock, Motown, contemporary pop music, progressive and classic rock." What the heck does that mean? I'd say that their music is rock, but on the lighter side, with a lot of acoustic sounds and a wide range of influences. For some reason, they remind me a little of Duncan Sheik but without the complexity and thoughtfulness of Sheik's lyrics.

Of the four tracks on their site, I consistently liked Dummy the best, and am curious to know if their new album Beautiful Explosion leans more in that direction (with alternative rock influences) or in the direction of their other tracks (which reminded me some of 60's pop and even Dylan at points). Although you can buy this album in a variety of places, hopefully they'll make it available through a DRM-free outlet like Amazon's mp3 store or eMusic soon. In the meantime, look for it at iTunes and as an import at Amazon.
